Cashman: Storm a perfect opportunity to pay it forward

head shotA massive winter snowstorm gives many people the chance either to act as nasty as the weather or show some civility toward a neighbor in need.

So far this winter, Bay Staters have had it pretty easy. But this storm is bringing us back to New England reality. Doctor’s appointments that have been scheduled for months are canceled, flights are grounded and important job interviews postponed.

Everyone has a tale of woe of being inconvenienced by the storm. So you can either move to sunny Florida, where it’s 65 degrees today, or try a different tack to the normal lamenting about your derailed plans.

Here’s a challenge. If you are a healthy and able person, try doing something nice and helpful for a neighbor or a complete stranger over the next 48 hours. This storm is a bummer for just about everyone, but instead of crying about it, try helping those who could really use an extra hand.

Let’s face it, there isn’t much any of us can do over the next day or two besides sitting around. Use the time to help, not complain. You’ll end up feeling better about yourself and the situation.

Bostonians are renowned for their ruthless behavior when it comes to shoveling out their vehicles and claiming ownership of that public parking spot. Mayor Marty Walsh says the spot is yours for 48 hours after you clear the space. Bad idea. Bizarre space-saving techniques lead to arguments and outright fights.

The South End has banned the space-saving practice. If you leave the spot you’ve shoveled, it’s no longer yours. This storm will be the first real test since the ban has been in place to see how neighborhood residents take to the rule.

Of course it’s frustrating to spend an hour shoveling out a spot that some undeserving driver will take over. The only silver lining is that you get to pull that same trick on someone else once they leave that precious cleared parking spot.

Soon this storm will be behind us. In the meantime, lighten up Boston!
