Cashman: Rest, gov-elect, before the wild ride gets going

It’s time to take a breather! Gov.-elect Charlie Baker is finally going to get some much needed R&R with wife Lauren. After months of nonstop campaigning and then spending the last two weeks meeting with supporters and elected officials, Baker is taking a break.

He and Lauren will head “someplace warm” and stay at a hotel for the next week while enjoying some down time.

This will be the last vacation in the next four years (eight if he’s lucky!) where he can actually unplug. Soon, working vacations will become the new norm.

The Swampscott Republican will have to answer the phone if, let’s say, the Health Connector website implodes again, his lieutenant governor decides to take a late-night suspicious drive and ends up crashing a state vehicle, an MBTA trolley driver rear-ends a train while he’s texting, DCF loses another child (God forbid) or a rogue chemist taints thousands of criminal cases by mishandling state drug evidence.

And then there’s the drama caused by Mother Nature.

Vacations will also be interrupted by potential tornadoes, massive flooding and treacherous winter storms. Getting through his first major storm as governor will be one of his early tests.

Get your rest now, Baker, because you will be constantly putting out fires or being asked to comment on everything related to state government, and sometimes just the news of the day.

I don’t think anyone has asked him about Kim Kardashian’s naked magazine cover. No need to worry — there are just as many nude photos of Kardashian to come as there will be issues plaguing the commonwealth. Sooo much to look forward to.

Baker will enjoy some pleasure reading while away. His neighbor, who he watches football with each weekend, gave him the book titled “Scribe, My Life In Sports” by Bill Ryan.

Also, the athletic couple hopes to hit the hotel gym a few times to burn off some of those vacation calories.

This is the first time they will go away, just the two of them, for more than a single night, since they had kids. This vacation is decades overdue.

Enjoy, governor-elect.
