Bill Cosby has some nerve. He has no business being in show business right now.
Amid allegations he drugged and raped more than a dozen women, “America’s dad” took to the stage at Florida’s King Center for the Performing Arts this weekend and got not one, but two standing ovations.
One fan even yelled out during the performance, “We love you, Bill Cosby!”
There’s certainly nothing funny about these allegations, so no one should find his jokes amusing.
Some people can’t, and won’t, believe the allegations that the funny man used his fame to take advantage of young women, while others are wondering who is the real Bill Cosby.
For many people who grew up watching “The Cosby Show,” it is hard to fathom how Dr. Cliff Huxable could be accused of raping so many women. He has that Santa Claus image that makes people trust him. Sadly, it is often those types of perpetrators who feel they can prey on the weak and get away with it.
If these allegations are true, it appears Cosby used his “Mr. Huxable image” to his sexual advantage. Who would believe the funny sitcom dad could do any harm besides telling a bad joke? He spent decades cementing Dr. Huxable into our minds.
Just because someone plays a nice guy on TV, of course, doesn’t mean they are anything like that in real life. Actors often are nothing like the people they play on TV or in movies. Unfortunately, society has a hard time differentiating the two.
The validity of these claims are still unproven, and Cosby has never been charged, but 12 different women have come forward with similar stories. Law enforcement should be investigating these claims rather than the case being tried in the media.
Cosby’s attorney, Martin Singer said: “The new, never-before-heard claims from women who have come forward in the past two weeks with unsubstantiated, fantastical stories about things they say occurred 30, 40, or even 50 years ago have escalated far past the point of absurdity.”
“It is long past time for this media vilification of Mr. Cosby to stop,” Singer said.
This story reminds me of Michael Jackson. The larger-than-life performer had a slew of child sexual allegations against him but his fans kept dancing to his music.
Cosby should suspend his comedy tour. It’s completely inappropriate for him to be telling jokes while this scandal unfolds. There’s just nothing funny about it.
