Donald Trump should offer Mitt Romney the job of secretary of state
today when the two meet for the second time since the election.
It’s hard to tell if Trump’s advisers like campaign guru Kellyanne
Conway have really gone rogue when they slammed Romney publicly, on
the cable news networks. Or maybe Trump’s inner circle planned it as a
diversion.
But what we do know is that this top post requires someone with a
steady hand who is capable of brokering deals and strengthening
relationships abroad.
The Trump supporters whining about the former Massachusetts governor
need to put on their big boy pants and realize what’s at stake here.
Yes, Romney did everything in his power to dismantle Trump’s
candidacy. He failed and now he’s willing to get on board and serve
our country. Why not let him.
The media has been all too delighted to replay ad nauseam an interview
Conway gave Sunday slamming to 2012 GOP nominee.
“It’s just breathtaking in scope and intensity the type of messages I
received from all over the country,” she said. Conway said a large
“number of people who feel betrayed to think that a Governor Romney
would get the most prominent Cabinet post after he went so far out of
his way to hurt Donald Trump.”
This is no longer about the campaign — it’s about how America will be
represented abroad. If sending Conway out over the weekend to insult
Mitt was somehow a crazy media trick, people obviously should ignore
it.
TV networks and newspapers conducted endless postmortems since the
election on how they failed voters by not covering policy. I for one
don’t buy any of the stories political pundits are sourcing from
inside Trump Tower. Journalists should go back to reporting the facts
and not the steady stream of political gossip.
“Mitt Romney is not running a campaign to be secretary of state.
There’s an audience of one here and it’s Donald Trump,” Ryan Williams,
a former Romney aide, told me on Herald Radio yesterday.
“Governor Romney clearly studied foreign policy and traveled the world
as a businessman and someone who had managed a role on the
international stage during the Salt Lake Olympics,” Williams said.
There are plenty of roles for Trump loyalists, but this particular job
should be filled today. Secretary of State Mitt Romney has a pretty
good ring to it.
