Cashman: Spice-hawking Mike Huckabee gets huckster rep

head shotA quick buck could cost former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee another shot at the White House.

Huckabee’s presidential chops have been called into question recently after starring in an infomercial for a questionable diabetes kit that promises to cure your Type 2 diabetes through lifestyle changes and dietary supplements.

The key ingredient to cure the disease, according to this $20 Diabetes Solution Kit, is cinnamon. This claim is refuted by the American Diabetes Association, which states on its website, “research has not been able to prove that dietary or herbal supplements (including omega-3 supplements, cinnamon, and other herbs) help to manage diabetes.”

It’s one thing to push back on liberal policies established by the Democrats, but it seems like a bad idea to take on the ADA in an infomercial. Cinnamon didn’t cure Huckabee’s diabetes diagnosis — losing 100 pounds did.

The same person that’s peddling a quasi-medical kit shouldn’t also be selling their ideas for fixing the economy and dismantling ISIS. Yet, he remains incredibly popular among voters. According to the most recent CNN poll, Huckabee rounds out the top five spot among GOP presidential candidates.

Making some fast cash hawking products is usually saved for your twilight after politics, not while you are still trying to build your name recognition and seek higher office.

After Fred Thompson dropped out of the presidential race he started shilling reverse mortgages on TV. Bob Dole promoted the use of Viagra and even appeared in a Pepsi commercial with Britney Spears — after he left Congress. People do need to make a living after all once their time in politics expires.

Huckabee’s spokeswoman told The New York Times that he no longer has a relationship with the company behind the diabetes kit. Yet, the ads were still running this week.

The question on the minds of many political observers is does he really want to be president or just increase his visibility for speaking fees and endorsement deals?

I am not buying what he’s selling — especially not his presidential aspirations.
